It has been reported by the Liverpool Echo that over 1000 medical operations were cancelled in 2018 – 2019 in hospitals across Liverpool and Merseyside.
The most common reason for non-medical cancellation was lack of time.
The results were based on data from the following hospitals:
- - The Royal Liverpool Hospital
- - Broadgreen Hospital
- - Aintree University Hospital
- - St Helens Hospital
- - Whiston Hospital
The Royal Liverpool Hospital and Broadgreen hospital cancelled a combined 92 operations in 2015/16 but this increased to 175 in 2018/19. A total of 570 operations were cancelled due to lack of time between 2015 and 2019
At Aintree, the hospital cancelled 100 operations in 2015/16 but this increased to 169 in 2018/19. A total of 504 operations were cancelled due to lack of time between 2015 and 2019
At Whitson hospital and St Helens Hospital (St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust), a combined 178 operations were cancelled due to lack of time in 2018/19
Of course thankfully in the vast majority of situations a delay, whilst an inconvenience, will not result in any significant injury. Unfortunately in some situations time is however a critical factor because often the earlier treatment is commenced, the better the chances of a patient making a good long-term recovery. If treatment is delayed, this can lead to permanent complications and health issues which could have been avoided.
